The inaugural Caribbean Conference of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners will be held in Nassau, Bahamas at the Atlantis Resort commencing on the evening of Sunday 18 April and concluding the evening of Tuesday 20 April. The conference is organised by the Bahamas, Miami, Cayman Islands and Turks and Caicos Islands branches of STEP. The TCI Association of Licensed Trustees (ALiT) has been active in adopting a code of conduct as well as a series of well-attended meetings with regulators. Further details of Association business are planned for publication, together with an area for members to access current topics. The TCI Branch of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) came into existence during 1998. The Branch started with fourteen members, now has over twenty and hopes to add more from among those suitably qualified and working in TCI. Branch news will also appear in this Domain periodically. Diplomatic Policy: The British Foreign Secretary introduced a White Paper to Parliament detailing a new partnership between the UK and her Overseas Territories". The White Paper has been published on the internet, and contains specific references to the future path of the offshore financial industry in the Overseas Territories. Legislative Developments: In January 1998, the TCI legislature passed the Proceeds of Crime Ordinance 1998, placing this jurisdiction in the vanguard of today's fight against money-laundering and financial crimes. Other financial services statutes passed by the Legislative Council at its meeting December 1998 were the Mutual Funds Ordinance 1998 and the Voluntary Dispositions Ordinance 1998. The Company Management (Licensing) Bill has been referred to a Select Committee. Staff Changes: The Trust Company welcomes a new Assistant Manager. Terminal Building: Improvements to the Providenciales International Airport are almost complete, and should result in a much-improved greeting for visitors in the shape of a new Arrivals Hall. Area Code: The telephone area code for the Turks and Caicos Islands has changed. With effect from 1 June 1997, the new area code became (649) instead of (809). The old code no longer works as of 1 June 1998. TCI has also caught up with elsewhere by requiring seven-digit local dialling. Further details are available via the News Area.
